UBC Voter-Funded Media Contest 2007-2008

The University of British Columbia Alma Mater Society held its second annual voter-funded media (VFM) competition in January 2008, sponsored by VoterMedia.org founder Mark Latham. Contest rules were specified in the Electoral Code (at the end, in Article 14). Summary:

Media Award Pool: $8,000 total

Media Contest Entry Fee: $150 -- see discussion

Media Eligibility: Open to any person, group or organization, whether affiliated with UBC or not, except election candidates (after filing nomination papers) and members of the Elections Committee or Student Court. "Once they submit their nomination papers, candidates running in the election associated with the media contest may not be listed as contributors to any media outlet participating in the contest, but may submit letters to the editor of such a media outlet." (Electoral Code article 14.2)

Contest Judges: Winners determined by UBC students voting in the January 2008 AMS Council election.

Voting Format: There will be a VFM section on the election ballot, showing the media award contestants. Each voter selects one of these five choices for each contestant: No Money, $500, $1000, $1500, $2000. Non-votes for any contestant will be interpreted by default as No Money (i.e. $0).

Vote Aggregation Method: VFM Committee proposed using Interpolated Consensus -- see explanation.

Judging Criteria: The contest is intended to encourage election coverage helpful to voters, including analysis of AMS issues, interviews and assessments of electoral candidates, and reviews of the other media contestants. However, students are free to vote by any criteria they choose. Media contestants can communicate information to student voters via websites and/or any other means, in accordance with the Voter Funded Media Contest Rules to be established by the AMS 2008 Elections Committee.

Contestant Listing: Each media contestant's name and web link will be displayed on the AMS Elections website Voter-Funded Media page promptly after entering the contest. Contestant names will be listed there and on the January 2008 ballot in chronological order of completing registration for the contest.

Contest Entry Period: Until 4 pm January 18, 2008.

How to Enter the Contest: See Entry Form.
