Langara Students Union is holding a VFM Contest, with media awards allocated by student voters, sponsored by VoterMedia.org founder Mark Latham. Our goals are to promote student awareness and engagement in LSU issues and elections.
Awards: $1500 total -- 1st prize $500, 2nd $400, 3rd $300, 4th $200, 5th $100.
Entry Period: From May 12 through September 30, 2008. Contestants are encouraged to enter sooner rather than later, and will be listed in chronological order of entry, here and on the ballot. ENTRY FORM
Voting Period: In October 2008, on the LSU election ballot. We encourage voters to reward media for all their past coverage, including May through October 2008 -- two LSU elections and anything that happens in between.
Voters: Langara College students.
(Media) Contestants: Open to any person, group or organization, whether affiliated with Langara or not. Contestant names & links will be listed above as they are received.
Contest Entry Fee: $20.
Voting Format: Preferential voting -- you rank all the media, specifying your 1st choice contestant, 2nd choice contestant etc.
Vote Aggregation Method: The Condorcet method implemented by the program OpenSTV (with "Schwartz Sequential Dropping"). This determines a first-place winner; then that contestant is removed from consideration and the same method determines the second-place winner; etc.
Judging Criteria: Voters are free to evaluate media contestants any way they choose. Media contestants are free to appeal to voters (or not) any way they choose (of course subject to the laws of the land, like libel, copyright, pornography etc.).
